Fuzzy coat making...

topic posted Wed, March 8, 2006 - 4:28 PM by  Carla ~ O.o
I've had several people who want to to this, and I'd love to set up a time to get together and make our fuzzy coats for the desert camping season... especially before it's too hot to work on them during the day (I did that last, year, Yuck!)

The biggest question is where to do this... does anyone have a large enough space, flat area, yard, they would be willing to host a fun and fuzzy gathering in the near future?

:)

I can't be much help on space, but I would love to join the party, if that's okay?

Not sure how much fabric is recommended (guessing a couple of yards?), but I do highly recommend the garment district downtown. Anyone up for a field trip?

Yea totally... I guess I also forgot the most important question... how much would materials cost?

        Hey Jeeferson,

My fabulous coat, which many of you have seen and a few have been lucky enough to experience ;-), took all of 5 yards. The long pile is $18/yd in downtown LA Fabric district, then you have to decide on the lining (you'll need 5 yards of it as well). You can spend anywhere from $1/yd to $20/yd or more.

So for materials, you're talking about a minimum of $100 or so, and you can go up from there if your lining material is expensive.

A couple of tips: The long pile fur is $18/yd everywhere. You might be able to haggle a bit, but you'll do much better if you shop around for the lining. For example, I found the lining that I wanted and the guy wanted $25/yd for it. I took a small sample and continued shopping. Three strores later, I found the EXACT same fabric for $5.99/yd. I offered her $5/yd and shee took it. For EXACTLY the same material. I went back to the original store and asked him what his "best price" was. He said, "Today, for you my friend, I can sell it to you for $20/yd. How much you like?"

"I think I'm OK with the 5 yards I have. I just paid $25 for it." And I walked away.

The simple pattern I have uses 3 yard of 60" wide fur and about 5 yards of lining (45" wide)... it has no hood... if you want a hood or are taller or much wider (my pattern is about a size large), I would suggest between 4-5 yards...

For lining, I've been using satins and chinese style brocades, they run from $2-$6 a yard... I wouldn't suggest trying to make a 2-side fur coat unless you have an industrial sewing machine... mine couldn't handle it ;)

Everyone is welcome to come when we have this fur coat gathering... only requirement are to bring your own materials, scissors (helpful) or exacto knife, a sewing machine if you've got one, and the willingness to chase down the fur bunnies fur fabric creates :)

I'm in...maybe we could do it at my house, but I can't accomodate more than 4-5 fuzzy coats. My allergies will be off the hook bad. It depends on when, also.

I really want to make a faux fur coat, but I've been having a terrible time finding patterns.
I want to make a long, lined coat but I Want it to be more fitted and I don't want it to look boxy on me.
I was thinking more old hollywood glamish style than just a straight coat. Probably a bit fuller in the collar and trimmer in the waist.
I also don't want a hood. I'm going to be in the fashion district on friday, so I was hoping to find a decent pattern by then.

Anyone have any suggestions? I've been scouring the internet and all the patterns I've found are either generic boxy things that don't take faux fur into account or are for dolls. I don't have much sewing experience, the last pattern I did was when I was 10 or 11, but I'm really good at putting things together so I think I should be able to figure it all out.

any help would be much appreciated and I will definitely post pictures when it's complete (Even if it doesn't turn out exactly as I wanted!)

Definitely interested. I am in the midst of making a fudgee bear suit and I have enough fur and lining satin left over to make a coat. Please keep me in zhe looop.

        Watch this space... :)

Tracey - my suggestion would be to get a pattern for a womens suit jacket and use at least a size larger (to accomadate the fur) for a fitted jacket... the only downside is most fitted jacket patters have a LOT more step and pieces than a simple jacket pattern... I made a fitted coat by taking in the waist on the same pattern I always use, but it was trial and error process and it ended up being a little snug :)

yeay Paris, another blue Fudgee Bear! (check mine out in my pix, I'm Sky Blue Bear!)

Tracey, unfortunatly the body skimming patterns require some skill and patience. I'm not saying dont do it, just know that I dont reccomend these garments as a first time project unless you are really driven and forgiving of yourself, or have a skilled friend to assist. Mine all have princess seaming to get the female sillouette, and thats about double the pinning and sewing of a boxy cut one.
I dont mean to be a downer, but I have friends every year calling me almost in tears as they struggle with loming deadlines and fur coat patterns that need a little more skill than thier current level. Boxy can be good first time out... look at vlovos...1

don't worry, I'm not taking it as a wet blanket.
thankfully I have a wonderfully patient grandmother. she lives about half a continent away, but I have pretty much a year to finish this coat (fuzzy coat + summer in LA = blah) so I will just work on it whenever we're in the same place and she should be able to help me with the more maddening parts.

I just got a pattern so at least I'll know how much fabric to get on friday and we'll see how it goes from there. if it doesn't turn out...fuzzy scarves for everyone!

We haven't missed the pahhhty, have we? I'd take a tried and tested burner pattern over Butterick and Simplicity anyday... was just looking at some designs today, in fact... I haven't seen a date decided upon yet.

Scissors... I have alot of scissors... the heavy-duty metal handled ones. I may not have space to share, but by gum, I've got plenty of scissors.
